Home Grown Butterflies
We're reading Home-Grown Butterflies in class this week. It's a real story about how people raise butterflies in Costa Rica. In this one village, there were fewer and fewer fish to eat and sell for money. Soon they would have to cut down trees from the rain forest in order to farm the land. A scientist taught the school kids how to start a butterfly farm! They now sell the pupae, or eggs, to zoos. My conclusion is that those kids are serious about protecting their environment.

We're reading the story Boom Town, which tells a story
about a young girl and her family who moved west.
Amanda is bored, so she bakes a pie. After people
begin buying her pies, Amanda starts a bakery. Things
happen one after another. We keep track of the things
that happen and the order, or sequence, in which they
happen. When we finish reading, we’ll know which events
are really important. I guess they’ll lead us to know
how Boom Town came to be.

In My Very Own Room, a young girl is sharing a
room with five brothers. What she wants more than anything is to have her own room. Because of the title, we think the girl will get her room in the end. We keep making predictions as we read. They are good guesses about what will happen next, and they’re based on clues the author has given. Making predictions are fun! It’s like solving little mysteries. The predictions also keep us get involved in the story.

This week we learned the acronym BOAS. The word BOAS stand for but, or, and, & so!
We use these conjunctions
to combine sentences.
We got to wear BOAS as we worked with our writing buddies! It was a lot of fun!
Mrs. Ochoa and I are getting our "BOAS" on! We're making "fancy" combined sentences with the kids! |

WOLF!
This week our class is reading a story titled Wolf!
The story’s about a wolf that sees other animals
reading books and wants to read, too. We can tell how
the characters are alike and how they are different.
They are alike because they are all talking animals. The pig, duck, and cow can read, but the wolf can’t. That’s a way the characters are different. It’s fun to compare and contrast the characters as we read.

Our class will be reading about people that help the
environment. In Earth Smart, the main idea is that
Goodwillie Environment School is a green school. A
green school is friendly to the environment. The details
tell more about the main idea. We will read about the school’s
walls and floors. They were built with recycled materials. As
we keep reading, there will be other details that tell me
more about this green school.
We went to see Dinosaur George on Wednesday, September 10th. We had a lot of fun, and we learned about dinosaurs that lived a long time ago!
